Northern Cardinal Pair I have never seen this Northern Cardinal pair close enough to photograph them together in the same frame.  When one is on the feeder, the other is on the look-out elsewhere.  Today, however, I was able to capture the male approaching the feeder twice just as his partner makes her exit to a nearby fence post.

Solar Eclipse There was 65-70 percent coverage of the solar eclipse here in Connecticut.  My impromptu attempt at a photo involved overlapping two neutral density filters, holding it up to the sky and (very) quickly taking a picture.

Western Lowland Gorilla The Congo Gorilla Forest is one of my favorite exhibits at the Bronx Zoo in New York.  It can be a “hit or miss” viewing experience but this past weekend, the crowds were small and three of the gorillas happened to be congregating near the front of the exhibit.   The gorilla pictured here looked like he was deep ignoring the playful movements of his friends that were climbing and throwing around branches and leaves.

I chose to remove all color distractions and create a black and white image that would hopefully capture this gorilla’s reflective mood and draw attention to his face, specifically his eyes.

Yaquina Head One of my favorite places in the world is Yaquina Head Natural Outstanding Area in Newport, Oregon. The lighthouse is Oregon’s tallest and was first lit on August 20, 1863. Wildlife viewing is abundant from the spouting grey whales to the harbor seals frolicking and laying on near-shore rocks. Up to 65,000 common murres arrive at Yaquina in the spring.

Sometimes video can capture moments in a way that photos cannot. Below is a short scenic compilation that I put together of my recent visit to Yaquina Head.

Watchful The earlier I hit the hiking trails, the more wildlife I see.  It is definitely worth the effort!

Film Trailer: Green Chimneys Dog Interaction Program A student at Green Chimneys has been wanting to make a documentary about their Dog Interaction Program for quite some time and the organization's Farm Manager was determined to make that happen for this young man. As the volunteer video editor, I feel privileged to be able to work with both of them on this very special project.

Here is the trailer:

Eastern Chipmunk I was observing some bullfrogs in a nearby pond when I turned around and saw this adorable eastern chipmunk perched on a stump enjoying a snack.  Eastern chipmunks are the only chipmunks found in the state of Connecticut, according to the DEEP.

Visit to the Bronx Zoo I recently made a trip to the Bronx Zoo in New York.  It was a quick visit that was spent mostly in the World of Birds and the Northern Ponds (admiring the baby ducklings) but I did manage to take some photographs of the bears, lions, and African Wild Dogs.  To view the photos, go to:

Turkey Vulture This turkey vulture resides at the Green Chimneys Wildlife and Rehabilitation Center in Brewster, New York.  I frequently see these birds flying around in the area where I live but they are often too far away to see their unique features.

Pileated Woodpecker This morning I heard a soft hammering sound coming from one of our large front yard trees.  I looked up and saw what I believe was a female Pileated Woodpecker drilling away at a branch.  She stayed there for awhile giving me enough time grab my camera and take some photos and video.

Shooting in Harsh, Bright Light A recent trip to the farm unfortunately coincided with the harshest part of the day lighting-wise.  It’s challenging to take photos when the sun is at its brightest but it can be done.  One trick that I like to use is placing the sun either directly above or to the side of my subject.

The Benefits of a Great Adoption Photo Below is a link to a good article discussing the benefits of a great adoption photo at your animal shelter.

"What can reduce a pet’s length of stay in your shelter or rescue from 43 days to 14 days? A great adoption photo."
